Elementary Principal Megan Gilkey said, “As the 2025–2026 school year begins, Syracuse Elementary is excited to welcome students and families back to campus. Entering my second year as principal, I remain deeply grateful for the support of our school community and the dedication of our staff. Most of all, I am continually inspired by the curiosity, energy, and potential of our students.

“Last year, we laid a strong foundation rooted in our shared mission: helping little minds grow. That mission continues to shape every decision we make, from classroom instruction to new initiatives. This year, we’re building on that momentum with several exciting additions designed to support student learning, engagement, and well-being.

“These advancements are only possible because of the strong partnership we share with families. Your involvement and trust fuel everything we do. I look forward to deepening those connections and celebrating another year of growth, discovery, and success at Syracuse Elementary.”

Middle School Principal Leslie McIntosh introduced the 2025-26 theme “Game On!” in the most recent newsletter. McIntosh said, “We’re bringing an extra layer of excitement with friendly homeroom competitions designed to spark teamwork, motivation, and school spirit. Students can also look forward to our new Wellness Wednesday Walking Club, where they’ll have a chance to start the day with a few laps and track their progress.”

The SMS Rocket on the RISE Award will recognize students who demonstrate Respect, Integrity, Synergy, and Effort—qualities that truly represent what it means to rise to the challenge.

Communication, STEM, History’s Mysteries, Rocket Reading, and Civics will be new elective classes for Junior High students.

Additionally, High Ability Learner (HAL) programming will be offered to students during the school day throughout the school year instead of after school.

High School Principal Jarred Royal said, “We will again focus on the Rocket Standard of Excellence, which focuses on our commitment to upholding the highest standards for both our students and adults.”

Royal said the Board of Education recently approved the purchase of Vape Detectors, which have been installed in the high school and some common middle school bathrooms. These are designed to keep students safe and help prevent such risk-taking behaviors.

All principals referred parents and patrons to the school year and activity calendars under the quicklinks on the website at www.SDARockets.org.

The activity calendar on the website will be the most up-to-date source for activities.
