The Syracuse City Council met on Wednesday, April 9, and approved a street closure request by the Syracuse Rescue Service (SRS).
SRS is hosting a Fun Day to kickoff EMS Week.
To facilitate the SRS event, the Syracsue City Council approved the closing of Chestnut Street from 12th Street to the Aqua Center south property line on May 18th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The council also approved restricting the parking on 5th Street from Plum to Mohawk Streets on May 31st from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The parking restriction means cars may travel down 5th Street but not park on either side during this time.
The Nebraska Rod and Custom Association car cruise featuring two groups of approximately 200 cars each will drive down 5th Street en route to the Fair Center. An SDL for Roc Hopper’s third anniversary party to be held on the north side of their property at 448 5th Street was approved for May 31, 2025 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In the Public Works report, Superintendent Jeff Vogt discussed the purchase of AMI Electrical Installs. AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure which is a system that measures, collects and analyzes energy usage, and interacts with advanced devices such as electric meters through various communication.
The Utility Billing Clerk would be able to see the data. The proposed purchase is estimated to cost $77,000 and would include an allocation from this year’s budget and next year’s budget.
The purchase would cover 125 meters with one meter collecting information for 7-10 houses. With the installation, less meters would need to be read. The council granted approval to proceed with the purchase that will take up to six months to receive.
Resolution No. 25-05 approved the Downtown Revitalization Grant Contract Extension. The extension moved the end date to May 6, 2026 and will allow businesses with enough time to complete their projects. The Council also approved Resolution No. 25-06, a renewal agreement with Five Nines IT Services for a period of three years.
Dan Mauk, Executive Director of the Nebraska City Area Economic Development Corporation (NCAEDC) and Board Member Jason Esser, OPPD, discussed the NCAEDC and its efforts throughout Otoe County and a potential financial partnership with the City of Syracuse.
