After a hard fought contest, the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca football team fell to Freeman on Friday, October 12, at Syracuse.
The Rockets defense held it’s ground throughout this game. On Freeman’s first possession, the Falcons decided to go for it on a fourth and two and Colby Lefferdink cut off the runner trying to sweep and made the tackle to stop the Falcon drive.
After a Rockets turnover the Falcons would score on a six yard run with 5:54 left in the first quarter. (two-point conversion good. 8-0).
In the second quarter, Freeman had the ball on the Rockets 11 yard line, and that’s where Garrett Lenners would run the ball for the TD. (two-point no good. 14-0).
During the third quarter, the Rockets were trailing 14-0, and possessed the ball on the Freeman 48. On a fourth and five, Burton Brandt ran a fake punt for the first down. Four plays later, Brandt found Mitch Brinkman on a pass play and Brinkman ran his way to the end zone for the 36 yard TD with 3:52 left. (Extra point no good. 14-6).
With the Rockets behind 20 to 6 in the fourth quarter, the Falcons added to it’s lead when Logan Anderson ran the ball in from 15 yards out with 3:12 left in the game. (Extra point no good. 26-6).
“I was really proud of the kid’s effort,” Coach Rick Nordhues said after the game. “They have nothing to be ashamed of tonight.”
The Rockets defense kept them in the game, but generating offense proved difficult. “We had times tonight where we had plays, but we had penalties or dropped the ball,” Nordhues said. “We just are not executing when we need to.”
S-D-A has one more game left on the schedule and it would be nice for the Rockets to end it’s season with a win. “I told the guys that I want to have fun this week,” said Nordhues. “I want to go down and give JCC the best game we possible can.”
Brandt had 87 passing yards and 57 rushing.
Grant Stubbendeck had a nice 34 yard run in the second quarter.
Brinkman had 41 yards receiving and on TD; Wil McCoy, three catches, 38 yards.
Brandt finished the game with 11 tackles and one sack on defense, and Lefferdink added seven tackles and three pass break-ups.
