The Rockets Brandon Cavanaugh and Burton Brandt combined for 337 yards rushing in a crushing, 34 to 6 win against Conestoga on Friday, September 28, at Conestoga.

The Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca football team got it’s first win on the season thanks to a strong ground game.

In the first quarter, Mitch Brinkman got things rolling for the Rockets when he reached the end zone on a 14-yard TD run.  Darin Burr was successful on the PAT attempt, and the Rockets led 7-0.

Cavanaugh, who finished the game with 174 rushing yards, scored from 13-yards out, and S-D-A ended the first quarter with a 13-0 lead.

Brandt would add to the lead after a 3-yard TD run, and scored on the two-point conversion. (21-0).

The Cougars got on the board before the second half when Josiah Nolting scored on a one-yard TD.  (Failed two-point conversion).  Rockets led 21-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, and the ball on the Cougar two-yard line, Brandt ran the ball in for the TD, and the Rockets had a controlling, 28-6 lead.  (Darin Burr PAT kick successful).

S-D-A added to it’s lead in the fourth quarter, when Brandt punched the ball in for the TD, and the Rockets went on to win 34-6.

The Rockets defense stood firm by allowing 87 passing yards and 41 rushing.

Tackles: Brandt, six; Cavanaugh, Brinkman, Wil McCoy, Nate Miles, and Ashton Bader, three each; Ethan Wittler, 20 assisted tackles.

Sacks; Brandt, two; Cavanaugh, one.

Cavanaugh carried the ball 16 times for 174 yards and one TD; Brandt, 23 carries, 163 yards, three TD; Brinkman, four carries, 12 yards, one TD; Jace Goebel, four carries, 23 yards.

McCoy had one catch for 38 yards.

The Rockets will be back in action, as they travel to Wilber-Clatonia on Friday, October, 5th.
