Brock Goebel completed a dominant four-match run through the Class C 106-pound weight bracket and added his name to the list of Syracuse state champions during action at the 2025 NSAA Individual State Wrestling Championships at the CHI Center in Omaha on Saturday, Feb. 22.
Goebel opened the state tournament on Thursday, Feb. 20, by winning against Sean Shultz of Raymond Central, 20-4, and against Diego Juarez of Ogallala, 21-6.
In Friday night’s semifinal round, Goebel won by 10-2 major decision against Erik Prado of Johnson County Central.
Finally, on Saturday, Goebel dominated all three periods of an 8-2 state championship win over Philip Streff of North Bend Central. Goebel ends the season with a record of 49-2.
Also earning his way onto the state medal stand for Syracuse was Cy Petersen. Petersen, 165 pounds, won by tech fall, 16-1, in the first round against Alex Braniff of Tekamah-Herman in Thursday’s first round. After a quarterfinal round loss to Wyatt Jelinek of Raymond Central, 12-3, Petersen won his next four matches to cap a 53-6 season with a third-place medal.
He won in Friday’s consolation rounds against Cole Kansteiner of Conestoga, 7-2; then beat Zane Cullers of Chadron, 10-0, in the match that guaranteed him a medal.
In Saturday’s medal rounds, Petersen beat Brittin Valentine of David City by pin in 4:05. He got revenge in the third-place match by topping Jelinek by pin in 1:33.
Four other Rockets wrestled at the state meet.
Oliver McIntosh lost to Cade Harsin of Minden, 19-2, on Thursday in the first round of the 132-pound weight bracket. He concluded his season with a loss by pin to Grant Eschiti of Wilber Clatonia in 2:06.
Maddox Stubbendick, 138 pounds, lost to Gauge Thomsen of Pender by pin in 4:51 during the first round on Thursday. He battled back on Friday with a win over Jager Leichleiter of Tekamah-Herman, 14-9 and then concluded his season with a pin fall loss to Cash Watson of Broken Bow.
Brody Brandt, 190 pounds, came within one win of a state medal. He beat Ikaiah Edgren of Wood River by pin in 2:40 and then battled back from a pin fall loss to Brock Jeannoutot of Crofton/Bloomfield in the second round by winning a consolation second round match over Tate Johannes of Arlington, 15-8. In the consolation third round, Brandt lost to Tregan Fitzke of Logan View by pin.
Hunter Holle, 285, lost to Zach Tarin of Chase County, 7-1, in the first round on Thursday. He won on Friday in the first-round consolations against Tristan Tobin of Tekamah-Herman by pin in 1:55 and then wrapped up his season with a pin fall loss to Brody Jakubowski of O’Neill.
