This summer three Rocket wrestlers have wrestled their way to the 2024 U.S. Marine Corps Junior and 16U Nationals at the FargoDome in Fargo, ND.
Syracuse High School Wrestling Coach Jeremy Goebel said the competitions are a good experience for the three wrestlers. “The opportunity to compete against other states is a great learning experience as a wrestler. It also allows them to meet other people, travel and build friendships through the sport of wrestling,” Goebel said.
Brody Brandt, Brock Goebel and Cy Petersen have qualified for this competition that will be held July 12-20, 2024.
At 190 pounds, Brandt wrestled 4-0 in Freestyle and 3-1 in Greco at the Cadet Duals in Herriman, Utah mid-June.
Brandt said, “I think that wrestling in the offseason has made me a better wrestler overall. I had a great time in Utah at the Cadet National Duals. I used that as a “practice run” for Fargo, and I’m very excited and ready to compete there too.”
The last weekend in June, Brock Goebel at 106 pounds and Cy Petersen at 165 pounds both wrestled at the AAU Scholastic National Duals in Ft. Lauderdale, FL with their respective teams placing 12th and 11th. Goebel went 8-2 and earned All American status. All American status is earned by taking seven matches or losing less than three matches. Petersen went 5-6 in his matches. Goebel went 5-3 at the and National High School Duals in Virginia Beach, VA in early May.
Brock Goebel explained,” These experiences and trips and people that I meet make me who I am today and how far I have gone in wrestling! I have met so many good people and friends that I will have a connection with them forever because of those trips! These top-notch competitions are tough. You might lose, you might win but no matter what I am getting better than the opponent that is not there! These tournaments help me a lot to improve and keep improving so I can achieve my goals that I have set!”
Petersen concurred, “These extra competitions have helped teach me lessons in competition that I would otherwise overlook. Competing at Fargo will allow me to see the best competition the country has and try my best to put myself against them.”
While in Ft. Lauderdale, the team also visited Universal Studios.
Brandt, Goebel and Petersen were Nebraska High School State Wrestling qualifiers with Goebel and Petersen medaling.
Jeremy Goebel said the team’s future success is being built in the off season with time in the weight room, Iron Sharpens Iron camps, Ralston League and also finding the mat when possible.
