Edwin H. Johnson, Jr.

Ashland - Edwin H. Johnson Jr., Doctor of Education, 80, of Ashland and formerly of Syracuse passed away on September 27, 2021 in Lincoln. He was born on April 30, 1941 to Edwin H. Sr. and Lucille (Jepson) Johnson in Moorhead, Iowa.

Ed was a passionate public school educator, beginning as a teacher in Lawton and Charter Oak Ute Schools in Iowa. He accepted his first principalship in Walthill, Nebraska, then moved to Westside High and Lincoln Public Schools. Ed was proud to be the Superintendent at Syracuse Public Schools for 20+ years. After retiring as Superintendent, he consulted for the NE School Board Association.

Ed loved golf, traveling with family, and Dodgers baseball. His love for baseball started as a young boy, and during college he was honored to pitch for the UNL baseball team. During recent winters spent in Arizona, he would often golf a minimum of 36 holes a day.

Ed fought an incredible battle against numerous health challenges. He will be forever remembered as a kind, caring, interesting, smiling man who loved life and his friends and family.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Lucille Johnson and brothers George and Everett. He was survived by his wife of 53 years, Karin; daughter Traci (Dave) Hallowell of Overland Park, KS and their sons Zach, Josh. and Luke; son Todd (special friend Becky Madery) of Friend and children Madison (Colin) Niemeyer, Max, Marlie, and Mason; son Scott (Molly) of Ashland and their children Jacob, Jack, Joe, and Johnni; sister Nadine Johnson, and many beloved extended family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse. The service will be livestreamed on the St. Paulinus Facebook page.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 3 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home in Syracuse.

Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation.
