Norma Jean Gress, age 90 of Nebraska City, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.
Norma Jean was born on Nov. 13, 1927, in rural Nebraska City; the daughter of Robert and Nora (Heng) Kreifels.  
She attended country school and later St. Bernard’s Academy in Nebraska City.
 On July 24, 1945, Norma Jean was united in marriage to Melvin A. Gress at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church by Paul and to this union four children were born:  Sharon, Jim, Sally and Steve.
She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. In addition to being a mom and wife, she worked alongside Melvin on the farm for many years.  Norma Jean also worked at Hested’s, Newberries, Tobers and Catron Orchard.
Norma Jean is survived by her husband of 72 years, Melvin Gress of Nebraska City; children:  Sharon Durr of Nebraska City, Jim Gress and wife Carolyn of Nebraska City, Sally McElroy of Bennington, and Steve Gress and wife Chris of Ashland; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; brother LeRoy Kreifels of Nebraska City; sister-in-law Mary Kreifels of Nebraska City; other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Nora Kreifels; son-in-law Arnold Durr; brother Milton Kreifels and sisters and brothers-in-law:  Velda Kreifels, Esther Wirth and husband James, Leonard Gress and wife Mava and Harold Gress and wife Margaret.
A Funeral Mass was to be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Mark Cyza officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Benedict’s Cemetery.
A Rosary was to be recited at 7 p.m. on Monday (7/9) evening at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.  The family was to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. prior to the Rosary.
Memorials may be given to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the Lourdes Endowment or Parkinson’s Foundation.
