Joan Iris Steckly was born in Omak, Wash., on May 31, 1948, to James and Iris Lucille (Cook) Mills, the second of five children and later was blessed with a brother, the son of Dale Steckly.  Joan passed away suddenly Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017, at her home in Beaver Crossing, at the age of 68.  
As a young girl, she moved with her family to Nebraska and made her home in Nebraska City where she began her education.  
Joan later attended Lincoln High School and later in life completed all the requirements to earn her GED.
She was employed at Lee’s Chicken in Lincoln.  
She was united in marriage to David L. Steckly on April 14, 1973, and to this union two children were added to her family which included her first child, Michelle.  
Together they made their home in Beaver Crossing.  Joan was employed with Carol Wright Sales in Lincoln, Lloyd’s Beaver Lounge in Beaver Crossing, and later retired from Ridgewood Care Center in Seward.
Joan was a hard-worker and never met a stranger.  Enjoying special times with neighbors and friends.    
Joan was a wonderful mother and caregiver for her mother-in-law, Cecelia, until she recently fell and broke her hip and arm.  Joan loved her children and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.  
She enjoyed bowling and golfing with her friends and family in Friend.
Joan loved all her household pets, especially her dogs, Secret and Jasmine.   
She is survived by her husband, David Steckly of Beaver Crossing; children and spouses, Michelle “Shelly” and Robbie Brown of Nebraska City, Dave and Michelle “Chelle” Steckly of Exeter; two grandchildren, Shelby Kouba of Lincoln and Rickie Hickman of Exeter; sisters and brother-in-law, Shirley Cooney of Omaha; Ruth Roose of Omaha; Charlene and Eddie Boyd of Lincoln; brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Mary Steckly of Lincoln; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Diana and Richard Ferguson of Howells; Donna and Douglas Upton of Beaver Crossing; Jerry and Kathy Steckly, Larry and Patricia Steckly, all of Lincoln; Michael Steckly of Superior, Lonnie Steckly and significant other, Angie Angel, both of Wahoo; mother-in-law, Cecelia “CeCe” Steckly of Seward; step-father, Dale Steckly and significant other, Sharon Martin of Lincoln, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Cynthia, her sister, Barbara Mills, and her father-in-law, Gerald Steckly.  
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time in Beaver Crossing.  
Burial will take place also at a later time in the Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Milford.  
In lieu of flowers, memorials are directed in care of the family for later designation.  
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend.
