Shirley J. Dovel, age 80 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Monday, May 30, 2016 at her home.

 

Shirley was born to Charlie “Dude” and Marie (Scott) Mount on February 19, 1936 at her parents home east of Hamburg, IA.  Her mother died when Shirley was only 12.  Her father married again to Fay Scott, who helped in raising Shirley and her siblings.  Shirley graduated from the Farragut High School in 1954.

 

Shirley was married to Murl C. Dovel on January 9, 1955 in Hamburg, IA and to this union five children were born:  Marie, Theresa, Charles, Alan and Mike.

 

She lived in the Farragut/Hamburg area her whole life.  Shirley worked side by side with her husband, Murl, at the Hamburg Locker for over 50 years.  She loved cooking for company and friends and she adored animals.  She was always nursing abandoned animals; anything from baby pigs to baby squirrels.  Shirley also had many dogs over the years and she dearly loved all of them.

 

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Murl Dovel of Hamburg, IA;  children:  Marie Catlett and husband David of Hamburg, IA; Theresa Gregg and husband Patrick of Council Bluffs, IA; Charles Dovel and wife Debbie of Hamburg, IA; Alan Dovel and wife Kim of Hamburg, IA and Mike Dovel of Hamburg, IA; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, step-mother, one brother, two sisters and one grandson.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA with Fr. Vernon Smith officiating.  Burial will follow the services at Mt. Zion Cemetery outside of Hamburg.

 

A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (6/1) evening at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg.  The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the mortuary.

 

Memorials may be given to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg.
