Mark A. Penney, age 50 of Gretna, NE (formerly Percival, IA) passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 at his home.

Mark was born on October 9, 1965 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Keith G. and Agnes C. (Varenhorst) Penney.  He attended elementary school in Percival, IA and then attended Nebraska City High School, where he graduated with the class of 1984.  Following high school he went Peru State College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business.

He was united in marriage to Paula A. Thorne on October 8, 1994 in Nebraska City, NE and to this union a son was born: Marek.

Mark worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as the Senior Manager of Unit Train Service.

He is survived by his wife Paula Penney of Gretna, NE; son Marek Penney of the home; two brothers:  Philip Penney of Percival, IA and Steven Penney and wife Bonnie of Council Bluffs, IA; nephews:  Kyle Penney and wife Lynnae, Ryan Penney and wife Katie Kinsella, Tyler Penney and Riley Penney; father and mother-in-law Claude and Judy Thorne of Nebr. City; sister-in-law Claudine Thorne of North Platte, NE; brother-in-law Cyrus Thorne of Lincoln, NE; and other family and friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Keith on Jan. 18, 2000 and mother, Agnes on April 29, 2008.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 3, 2016 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating.  Burial will follow the services at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (6/2) evening at the mortuary, followed by the family greeting friends.

Memorials may be given to the Autism Society or St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Gretna, NE.
