Gordon Leslie Scoles of Hamburg, Iowa passed away Sunday February 28, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

He was born on December 28th, 1922 on a farm near Watson, Missouri to Clyde and Inez (Sayer) Scoles. He was welcomed into the family by an older brother Richard.

He grew up in the Watson, Riverton and Hamburg area, attending county grade schools. He attended the Hamburg School and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1941.

Gordon along with friends left Hamburg in December, on their way to California to look for work . On their way out there, Pearl Harbor was attacked and they stopped in Denver, Colorado and enlisted in the service. Gordon joined the Coast Guard December 10th 1941. After training he served most of his time on the CGC Clover, west of Alaska, protecting the Aleutian Islands. He received his honorable discharge May 27, 1946 at St. Louis, Missouri.

He came back to Hamburg area to help with farming and married Barbara Wingate March 12, 1949. They farmed in the local areas many years and spent a few years farming in Texas, then moving back to Hamburg. He also bought and remolded homes in the area. Barbara passed away October 7, 1989.

On December 8, 1990 he married Dorothy Woltemath, and they were able to enjoy 25 years of marriage. He loved Dorothy’s four children and all 11 grandchildren with all of his heart and really thought he was blessed to have them to enjoy.

Gordon enjoyed being a snowbird to AZ in the winters and his passions were playing cards and golfing both in AZ with friends and at Fremont County Golf course. If anyone mentioned cards, Gordon was there!!!!

He is survived by his wife: Dorothy Woltemath, step children, Peggy (Warren) Hayes, Red Oak, IA. Robert (Kelli) Woltemath, Hamburg, IA. Barbara (Brett) Boushele, Aurora, CO. Sandra (John) Graybill, Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren; Andrew and Sarah Hayes, Hilary and Emily Woltemath, Megan and Alex Chesnut, Ava, Harrison, and Hayden Boushele, Jenna and Connor Graybill; mother-in-law; Ruth Lintz, Tecumseh, NE; brothers and sisters in law: Richard and Celia Wingate, Margie Farley, Eldon and Esther Buethe, Anton and Sharon Lintz and Alan and Beverly Forrest. nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara who died Oct. 7, 1989 and his brother Richard Scoles on Apr. 1, 2001 as well as Richard's wife, Angelina Scoles.

He was active in many Civic and Community jobs before his retirement, as well as a member of the American Legion, Elks and Eagles. He was so proud to be on the Military Firing Squad honoring his fallen brothers and sisters and felt such on honor to do this until his health prevented him from doing so. Gordon was very honored to be a part of the WWII Honors Flight to Washington DC in December 2010.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamburg, IA. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in rural Hamburg with complete military services conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday (3/2) evening at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with a Prayer Service to follow at 7:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Assn. or the Hamburg Community Foundation.
