Senator Kamala Harris, Secretary Julian Castro and Gov. John Hickenlooper will each speak. Harris and Castro have announced they are running for the Democratic nomination for president and Hickenlooper is expected to make an announcement soon. All have made previous visits to Iowa, but this is their first visit to Story County.

Harris has been the junior United States Senator for California since 2017, and she previously served as the 32nd attorney general of California from 2011 to 2017, and as district attorney of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.

Castro served as the 16th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama from 2014 to 2017, the youngest member of the Obama Cabinet.

Hickenlooper is the former mayor of Denver and served as the 42nd governor of Colorado from 2011 to 2019.

J.D. Scholten, the Democratic candidate who faced Steve King in 2018, will be a featured speaker. He recently announced the launch of the nonprofit, Working Hero.

Newly elected State Auditor Rob Sand will be a guest speaker. Before his election, Sand was best known for his work in the attorney general’s office, where he unearthed and ended the largest lottery rigging scam in American history.

Story County Treasurer Ted Rasmusson will be the master of ceremonies.

The Story County Democrats Soup Supper is an annual event with a tradition of offering a first chance to meet candidates for president, Senate, Congress and governor. A wide variety of homemade soups and desserts, with vegan and gluten-free options, will be served. This is not a ticketed event. Free-will donations are accepted at the door.

“We are very excited for this chance to meet 3 of the 2020 candidates and grateful to them and all our speakers and hard working volunteers for helping make this a successful fundraiser. We have an amazing wealth of great candidates and look forward to featuring other candidates at later events as their schedules allow,” said Story County Democrats Chair Jan Bauer.
