The Otoe County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed May as Community Action Month in Otoe County.
Southeast Nebraska Community Action (SENCA) Development Director Susan Keholm and Nebraska City Coordinator Cathy Moore requested the proclamation from the board during the commissioners’ regular meeting on April 22.
Moore said the Nebraska City office provided food assistance to 84 households (232 people), utility assistance to 24 households (69 people), rental assistance to 8 households (16 people), and job skills training to three individuals through Southeast Community College.
During the meeting, board members also discussed the donation to the county of a 280-foot radio tower near Lorton.
Otoe County Emergency Management Director Gregg Goebel said the county has had estimates of $1 million to build a new 250-foot tower, and Otoe County Sheriff Colin Caudill said use of the tower would help resolve communications issues for fire and rescue services in the southern part of the county.
Commissioners directed Goebel to apply for grant funding to help cover the cost of tower inspection and insurance.
In other matters, the commissioners
Approved a subdivision plat of the D&T McGinnis Subdivision, a 3.66-acre tract located ¾ of a mile east of the intersection of County Roads M and 52;
Approved a subdivision plat of the T&C Subdivision, a 5-acre tract located in the northeast corner of County Roads H and 14;
Approved increasing the annual contribution limit from $2,000 to $3,000 for the Flex Spending (FSA) benefit offered to employees beginning July 1;
