Gigstad honored for service to Syracuse City Council

At the Syracuse City Council meeting December 10, 2024, retiring council member Orv Gigstad was recognized for his service.

Gigstad was appointed in 2014 by then Mayor KC Ortiz to fill a vacated position. Gigstad was re-elected in 2016 and 2020.

Mayor Deb Dettmer read from a list of over 20 items the city has accomplished while Gigstad served on council.

Some of the accomplishments included the approval of a Parks Master Plan, Downtown Revitalization Plan, and new land purchase for fire and rescue.

He supported the Water Supply Improvement Project, new Bathhouse and new filtration system for mechanical room at Syracuse Aqua Center.

Gigstad said he had no idea how many things the city was involved in until he got on council.

“There are so many wonderful people in the town and wonderful staff that gets things done,” Gigstad commented.

The flower leis are part of the beachy theme to celebrate Gigstad’s retirement from council.

City Attorney Jerry Stilmock noted that Gigstad dutifully accepted when Mayor Ortiz reached out and expressed his heartfelt thanks to Gigstad for serving.

In other business from the meeting, Mayor Deb Dettmer and Wesley Halvorsen, both re-elected, took the Oath of Office. Newly elected Robb Johnson also took the Oath of Office. Jerry Werner was elected President of the Council. Mayor Dettmer appointed Nate Patton and Jerry Werner to the Finance Committee. The following appointments were also made: Kelly Farmer, City Clerk; Jeff Vogt, Superintendent of Public Works, Bruce Neemann, Building and Zoning Inspector; Brandt Horan Hallstrom and Stilmock and representatives Jerry Stilmock, Bob Hallstrom and Ryan McIntosh; Kelly Farmer, City Treasurer’; City Street Superintendent, Justin Stark; and City Engineer, Olsson.
