March Traffic Fatality Toll

During the month of March 2024, twenty-two people were killed in traffic crashes on Nebraska roadways, according to data collected by the Nebraska Department of Transportation.These 22 fatalities occurred in 18 fatal crashes.Nine of the nineteen vehicle occupants killed were not using seatbelts, seven were using a seatbelt, and three had seatbelt usage marked as unknown.Eighteen of the fatalities were in rural locations.There were two fatalities on the interstate, fifteen on other highways, and five on local roads.One of the fatalities was a pedestrian.Two of the fatalities were motorcyclists.

Youth Frontiers brings Courage Retreat to county seventh-grade students

Seventh graders across Otoe County recently had an opportunity to take part in a Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat during their school days.Representatives of the Omaha-based Youth Frontiers, an organization devoted to creating character in students, spent five and a half hours with students from Palmyra, Lourdes Central Catholic, Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca, and Nebraska City middle schools over the course of three days last week (students from Lourdes and S-D-A participated together on the same day).Students spent time in short, small group discussions led by high school student volunteers, as well as taking part in brief physical activities and listening to drama and music presentations.

County election offices mailing out early voting ballots for Primary Election

County election offices have begun sending out early voting ballots for the May 14, 2024, statewide primary to voters who completed early voting applications and fulfilled the new voter ID requirement.Voters have two options to fulfill the new voter ID requirement during the early voting application process:Voters can write their driver’s license or state ID number on their early voting application, orVoters can submit their early voting application with a photocopy of their acceptable photo ID.County election offices are working with voters who did not successfully complete the new voter ID requirement.“With the new voter ID law now in effect, Nebraskans who cast a ballot in the May 14th primary will be making history,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said.
