Two very similar teams on paper, the Syracuse Rockets (17-10) traveled to the Wahoo Warriors (1613) on Monday, October 17. Wahoo made a switch in conferences two years ago and was added back to the regular season schedule this year. The match-up proved to be a fight until the end. In 5 sets, the point differential was only 4 points.
Cy Petersen rushed for 93 yards on 10 carries and had the opening touchdown of the game for the Syracuse- Dunbar-Avoca football team in a 31-13 set back against Auburn on Friday, Oct. 7.
The Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca Rocket seventh grade football team traveled to Shenandoah, Iowa, on Thursday, Oct. 6 and fell 44-0.
The Syracuse Rocket volleyball team hosted the Logan View Raiders (10-14) on Thursday, October 6. The first set was full of runs, but by both teams. The Rockets went up 8-5 only for the Raiders to catch them at 10. The score continued to tie at 11, 12, 15, and 16 when the Rockets went on another run to 21-16 behind the serving of freshman Bridget Donovan and her two ace serves and errors by the Raiders. But the Raiders went on a run of their own with an ace serve and errors by the Rockets to tie the score at 22 and 23. The Rockets finished out the set with an ace serve by sophomore Jayden Meyer and a block by senior Katelyn Smith to win 25-23.
Rocket golfers Reese Stubbendick and Mallory Mueller recently wrapped up the fall season. Both golfers earned an athletic letter for their work on the team this season. Mueller is a senior while Stubbendick plans to return to the Rocket golf program for her senior season in 2023-24.
Peru State College will be hosting its annual Hall of Fame Weekend on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22. A reception, followed by a banquet, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening at the College’s Student Center. Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca scored on a first quarter touchdown run of 18 yards and then added scoring runs of 4-yards in the second and 35 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as the Rocket football team fell short against Raymond Central by the final count of 39-21 on Friday, Sept. 30. With the defeat, S-D-A fell to 4-2 on the season. S-D-A finished with 165 yards compared to 250 for Raymond Central. Rush yards were 143 to 110 in favor of the Rockets. Gabe Dilley had three point after kicks on the game and also had a kickoff for a touchback. Barret Brandt led the defense by racking up the most tackles. Kaleb Swanson had three tackles for loss.
Auburn scored late-game runs to break open a 7-6 advantage on the way to a 15-7 win over the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca softball team in district action on Monday. With the loss, S-D-A wrapped up its season at 5-20.
The Syracuse Rocket volleyball team hosted their four-team invitational on Monday, October 4th. Syracuse took on the Ralston Rams (8-14) in the first game. Junior setter Rylee Seelhoff started the game off with an ace serve and the tone was set. With junior Kadyn Sisco swinging with a vengeance, senior Katelyn Smith also saw success hitting a slide shot. And when the opposing side was looking for the hitters, Seelhoff snuck in some timely setter dumps for kills.
The Syracuse Dunbar-Avoca middle school football teams traveled to Malcolm and fell in the A game. In the B game, the Rockets picked up a win, 6-0, with the lone score being a touchdown run by Jake Janssen.
