For rural communities to survive and thrive, they need access to many of the same resources larger cities do—groceries, energy, broadband, and health care among them. To address the health care needs of rural seniors, Medicare has numerous special provisions, including a hospital category for Critical Access Hospitals (CAH)— facilities with 25 or fewer beds in communities distant from the next-closest hospital.

Mentioning the Unmentionables

Over the course of my career, I have performed countless pelvic exams on women of all ages from all walks of life. There are two common patient behaviors that I have observed. First, most women leave their socks on. This could be the fact that most stirrups are cold, but it also seems like one feels just a little less exposed when wearing at least one item of their own clothing. The other thing that almost every woman does in the exam room is hide her undergarments under her pile of clothes. It is interesting that almost everyone, me included, feels the need to cover and hide their “unmentionables” when they are about to bare the very areas normally covered by these garments.

Start Your Garden Right with Healthy Transplants

Transplants are the way to go with tomatoes, peppers and dozens of other vegetables, as well as many of the annual flowers common in Nebraska gardens. Transplants give long-season crops a head start before being put out in the garden and a chance to produce before fall frost. Annual flowers grown from transplants begin blooming weeks earlier than they would if a gardener planted them from seed.

Soybean yields excellent, but fungicide resistance concerning

While soybean prices and yields have generally been excellent last year, we still have many challenges to be aware of in the region. Probably one of the biggest concerns is the resistance of Frogeye Leaf Spot to QoI (strobilurin, FRAC group 11) fungicides. In 2020 Extension Educators across Nebraska sampled fields for frogeye leaf spot to determine how widespread resistance is to QoI or group 11 fungicides.

A history-making 60 days

The 2022 Legislative Session will go down in history as one of the Nebraska Unicameral’s finest. In just 60 days, the Legislature passed record tax relief, made critical public safety enhancements, and invested in generational water resource projects. As if this wasn’t enough, Senators also allocated $1.04 billion of federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding.
