Nebraska is the Beef State. Agriculture is the heart and soul of what we do. One in four jobs in Nebraska is related to agriculture. Beef is essential to our state’s economy. Recently, we celebrated a major win for our state and our beef industry. I joined over 1,000 people in North Platte for the ribbon-cutting of the new Sustainable Beef processing plant. It will process about 1,500 head of cattle per day when fully operational. It will create 850 good-paying jobs. It will also add $1 billion to the local economy each year. This is the power of Nebraskans coming together to solve problems.

Recently, President Trump re-committed to eliminating federal income taxes on Social Security benefits. He’s also promised to increase support for our veterans. I agree with President Trump. Social Security and veterans’ benefits should be completely tax-free. This week, I introduced two bills to help the President deliver on that agenda. My bills will help Americans keep more of their hard-earned money in retirement.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women. The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer is 1 in 24 for men and 1 in 26 for women. Early detection and treatment are instrumental at improving survival rates, and regular screening decreases the risk of colon cancer in the first place.

Every year, about this time, I go poking around the yard, hoping some of the bulbs and plants have made it through the winter.

With the completion of public hearings by individual committees, all-day floor debate will commence on March 31. We are more than 50 days into this 90-day “long session” of the Legislature and much work remains ahead.
