LCC Academic Decathlon places third at state

The Lourdes Central Catholic Academic Decathlon team placed third at state competition at Bellevue University on Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb. 18. Cora Krog was the team’s top scorer - she earned silver medals in Honors Music, Literature, and Interview. Evie Dorman earned a silver in Honors Speech. Theresa Gygi earned gold in Scholastic Speech and a silver in Scholastic Interview. Andrew Bakula earned a bronze in Scholastic Music. Ella Ragland earned a bronze in Varsity Math. Honors Alternate Makenzie Green earned silvers in Fine Arts and Hard Sciences. Scholastic Alternate Murphy Roby earned gold in Soft Sciences, silver in Fine Arts, and bronze in Hard Sciences. Varsity Alternate Gabriela Serna earned silvers in Fine Arts, Soft Sciences, and Hard Sciences. This year’s theme was “The American Revolution and the New Nation.”

Nebraska 4-H accepting nominations for annual volunteer recognition awards

Nebraska 4-H is now accepting nominations for a new awards program to recognize the outstanding contributions of 4-H volunteers across the state. The Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Recognition Awards honors adult and youth volunteers, as well as and multi-generational families, who have provided meaningful contributions to Nebraska 4-H.

Lourdes Central Catholic sixth- and eighth-grade students participated in the National History Day District competition on Friday, Feb. 17, at Peru State College. The following Lourdes students received recognition and awards for their projects: Junior Group Documentary - 2nd Place - Mary Bruggeman & Miesha Oggs, “The Life of Lucretia Mott” Junior Group Exhibit - 3rd Place - Dominic Schizas & Joseph Roberts, “The Wright Brothers” - 4th Place - Aaron Alvarado & Auggie Bruggeman, “The Vessel that Changed Maritime Safety” Junior Individual Documentary - 1st Place - Lillian Madison, “C-Sections: A New Frontier in Women’s Health” Junior Individual Exhibit - 1st Place - Hunter Lackey, “The Beeps that Built America” - 2nd Place - Cyrus Monson, “The King’s Men: The First Folio” - 3rd Place - Justus Kreifels, “Shorthorn Cattle: Red, White, and Roan” - 4th Place - Clayton Bantz, “The Most Iconic Landmark in Puerto Rico-Fort Morro” Junior Paper - 1st Place and the Dr. Sara B. Schools, communities come together to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Month

Schools across Otoe County came together last week during Random Acts of Kindness Week to be kind to one another. From kindness tiles at S-D-A High School to readings and activities relating to kindness at Lourdes Central Catholic to special posters for the Nebraska City Public School buildings and valentines for students from the community, the week of Feb.

January Nebraska traffic fatality total is lowest in four years

From Jenna Howell: “These posters were created by our HIGH SCHOOL ART CLASSES for Random Acts of Kindness Week at the elementary buildings! Huge shout out to Mrs. Rice and the art students for their amazing work!! We sure do have a lot of talent at NCPS!!” Nebraska has started 2023 with significantly fewer fatalities on state roads than the past three years, according to Bill Kovarik, Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator.
