The Otoe County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday, March 28, and took the following actions: Approved a conditional use permit for Frontier Cooperative to operate a refueling station for customers and cooperative vehicles and application machines. The station would be located at 3176 K Rd. and would offer gas, diesel, and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Customers would pay with a credit card, according to Craig Schultz, chief operations officer of Frontier Cooperative.

The negative impacts of drought, high nitrogen prices and other high prices associated with pasture management have left some pastures in the state in lessthan-ideal condition. Syracuse Area Clean Up Day is set for Saturday, April 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brendon Stinson of Syracuse has been awarded the Kelly Kneifl Industrial Technology Scholarship valued at $1,500 to continue their education at Wayne State College. Stinson is a graduate of Syracuse High School in 2021. Stinson’s parents are Jason and Ronda Stinson.

Anna Combs was hired as the new Spanish teacher and Garrett Reese was hired as the new music teacher for the 2023-24 school year at the Syracuse Board of Education meeting March 29. Resignations from Aleisha Sedlacek and David Purdham were accepted at the March 20, 2023 board of education meeting.

Plants purchased from the Syracuse Schools PTO will be available for pick-up at the Fair Center on Friday April 14 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. There will be extra plants for purchase; first come, first choice.

Work has begun on US 34/75, from reference post 382.19 to reference post 385.77, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Iowa Civil Contracting, of Victor, Iowa, is the contractor for this project.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Nebraska State Patrol is reminding drivers to keep their focus on the road to help keep themselves and other motorists safe. “Taking your attention off the road while driving is extremely dangerous,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol.
