Farm operators and agronomists from across the state will obtain valuable crop production-related information from on-farm research projects conducted on Nebraska farms by Nebraska farmers in partnership with University of Nebraska faculty. These research projects cover products, practices, and new technologies that impact farm productivity and profitability.
The Nebraska Public Service Commission recently approved an Order (C-5272) awarding 60 grants totaling nearly $18 million from the Nebraska Broadband Bridge Program (NBBP). The vote to approve the Order (C-5272) was 4-1 with Commissioner Crystal Rhoades dissenting.
Lawmakers gave first-round approval Jan. 11 to a bill that would cut Nebraska’s inheritance tax rates while increasing the amount of property value that is exempt from the tax.

An early morning accident on Highway 2 near Palmyra left one man dead and three other people injured. The Otoe County Sheriff ’s Office and the Nebraska State Patrol responded at 12:38 a.m. Jan. 15 to a headon accident east of Palmyra involving a semi-truck and a sport utility vehicle.
A Palmyra man is in custody after an eight-hour standoff with law enforcement on Jan. 12.
At approximately 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 12, the Syracuse Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at Love’s in Syracuse where a semi-truck was fully engulfed in flames. The department had the fire under control in about 10 minutes. Damage was limited to the semi only which was a total loss. There was no damage to the trailer and no damage to other trucks or trailers and no injuries. According to Syracuse Interim Fire Chief Keith McWilliams, the driver who was from Washington State awoke, started the truck and entered the truck stop. Effective this February, Billie, a female groundhog, will make her first appearance at the 34th Unadilla Groundhog Day. Unadilla Bill, the stuffed groundhog that predicted the weather for 33 years, made his last appearance in 2020 before passing his forecast predictions to Billie.
Sarah Browning, Extension Educator Since 1980 the National Garden Bureau has developed a “Year of ” plant program, with the goal of educating and inspiring gardeners to try new crops. Over the years, the program has grown to include six plant classes – houseplant, bulb or bulb-like, annual, perennial, vegetable and shrub – with one specific plant per class featured each year.
