Better Ba-C’s meeting begins new year for 4-H’ers

The organizational meeting for the Better Ba-C’s was held to start a new year for all. Members were asked for ideas of what they wanted to accomplish this year. Officers were elected. The officer team consists of Jenna Knake, Bailey Boitnott, Sydney Parsons, Daisa Smidt, Brooklyn Parsons, Maci Smidt, and Bryn Boitnott. Pine cone bird feeders were made to take outside the Good Samaritan Nursing Center. Other community service projects in motion include taking gifts to Good Samaritan Center, gathering blankets for the Senior Center, and serving Meals on Wheels.

February is National Parent Leadership Month

February is National Parent Leadership Month and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is recognizing parents that work to transform their families and communities in Nebraska. As DHHS’s mission is to help Nebraskans Live Better Lives, DHHS provides resources, programs, and training for parents to aid their families and positively impact their communities.

Cub Scouts host Pinewood Derby

Syracuse Cub Scout Pack 337 held their Pinewood Derby Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Unadilla Community Center. Lions, Bobcats, Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos sent cars racing down the track seeking speed honors and placed them on display for design honors. Twelve scout cars and six open class cars raced. Tony Simon organized this year’s event. The top three in each category advance to the 20th Annual Seven Feathers District Pinewood Derby at the Beatrice Municipal Auditorium in Beatrice on March 26. Nick Emerson is the Cub Master and Ashley Emerson is the Assistant Cub Master.

Martha and Don Romeo State 4-H Scholarship awarded to Otoe County 4-H’er

Otoe Country 4-H’er Bailey Boitnott was recently honored with the Romeo 4-H Scholarship. One male and one female from the state of Nebraska were awarded a $500 scholarship to be used for post-secondary education. The award was presented at the NAFM Convention in Kearney, NE. Mr. Romeo of Nashville, TN attended the presentation and was filled with stories of his upbringing in Omaha, NE, and the progression of his career. He commended both students on their involvement with 4-H, their community, and encouraged them to continue these practices in their adult lives. The NAFM was extremely supportive and encouraging to these young people; their passion for promoting fairs, 4-H, and community was obvious.

February is Low Vision Awareness, Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month

As the worldwide population ages, vision loss from eye disease is becoming a major health concern. More than 40 million people are of the age 65 or older, and that number is expected to more than double by 2050. By that same year, the number of Americans with agerelated eye diseases is also expected to double, and the number of people living with low vision is projected to triple.
