Syracuse hosts Nebraska Capitol Conference Honor Band

Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca welcomed students from 10 different schools for the Nebraska Capitol Conference Honor Band on March 7. Syracuse had nine students selected for the honor band: Lynn Ballinger, Sam Bennett (principal player), Jeremy Bohaty, Nathanial Cordray, Kayden DeGolyer (principal player), Caleb Dunster, Abigail Hansen (principal player), Treyton Jones, Noah McKenzie, Kaydynce Bohaty and Jace Stinson.

County commissioners discus ARPA fund spending plan

`The Otoe County Board of Commissioners began discussing how the county should spend its American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds during the board’s March 1 meeting. `So far, about $300,000 has been spent on maintenance of the courthouse and other county buildings, said Second District Commissioner Rick Freshman, including the construction of a storage shed for the courthouse’s snow removal equipment near the southeast corner of the courthouse property.

IRS revised 2021 Child Tax Credit and Advance Child Tax Credit Payments frequently asked questions

IR-2022-53, March 8, 2022 WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today updated its frequently asked questions (FAQs) (FS-2022-17 PDF) on the 2021 Child Tax Credit and Advance Child Tax Credit Payments. These updates are to help eligible families properly claim the credit when they prepare and file their 2021 tax return.

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month

Every nine seconds, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury. Every day, 137 people die in the U.S. because of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and over 5.3 million Americans live with a TBI-related disability. A TBI usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body, or an external force. Many who sustain a TBI do not seek treatment; one in every 60 people lives with the disability. Annually, 2.5 million sustain such an injury, 2.2 million are treated for TBI in emergency rooms and trauma centers, 280,000 are hospitalized, and 50,000 die. The leading cause of TBI are falls, traffic accidents, assaults, sports injuries, and combat injuries. An acquired brain injury (ABI) is any injury to the brain that is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma. Typical causes are electric shock, infectious disease, lightning strikes, near drowning, stroke, seizure, substance abuse/overdose, tumors, or toxic exposure. A TBI is a type of ABI.

Two-vehicle accident near Avoca

Otoe County Sheriff ’s Office deputies and Syracuse Rescue responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of County Roads B and 34 near Avoca on Wednesday, March 2. A Ford F250S pickup truck driven by Joshua P. Behmer of Avoca was northbound on CR 34 when it was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Silverado owned by Vantage Agri Service Inc. of Avoca and driven by Loren L. Stubbendick of Syracuse. The Ford failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and also failed to yield the right of way to the Chevrolet. Both vehicles were totaled, according to the sheriff ’s report, and Syracuse Rescue transported both men with suspected minor injuries.
