My name isn’t Mary, but sometimes, like the Nurs¬ery rhyme – I am quite contrary and I’m having a difficult time getting my garden to grow this year. I don’t have silver bells and cockle shells, all in a row, but I have half clay and the other half, road rock that passes for my garden soil this year.

Relief for American agricultural producers

The importance of a strong agriculture economy to the state of Nebraska and our entire nation cannot be overstated. Often overlooked in policy conversations, the products supplied by farmers and ranchers are fundamental to fueling our lives, filling our plates, putting shirts on our backs, and so much more. Yet, American ag producers currently face a bevy of historic crises which threaten their livelihoods and the long-term health of our economy. This comes at a time when relief for Americans suffering because of inflation and the security of the global food supply depends heavily on the American agriculture industry.

Inflammation and the Immune System

Many of my patients will say “Doctor, I am so inflamed”. The use of the word inflammation is commonplace as we search the market for anti-inflammatory diets or self-help books on inflammation. The inflammatory response created by the immune system contributes to healing, but when left unchecked can contribute to chronic disease, allergy, and non-specific symptoms such as achy joints, fatigue, and malaise. The immune system has two main parts. The first of these is the innate immune system which is the body’s first line of defense. The innate immune system acts as a barrier that prevents harmful materials from entering the body and responds quickly when needed. The second part is the adaptive immune system. This system is more specialized and takes over if the innate immune system is unsuccessful. The adaptive immune system responds slower than the innate immune system but more accurately.

One of his advice tidbits was “Son, are you aware that about the time you begin to think you are pretty tough, just remember that somewhere down the road and around the corner there is someone that is a little tougher than you”.
