Public meeting set Monday for county, local budgets

A joint public meeting on proposed property tax increases for Otoe County, the city of Syracuse, the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca School District, and the Palmyra School District is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the Fair Center Building, 135 Plum St., Syracuse. Otoe County will be requesting property taxes in the amount of $9,191,338.57; the city of Syracuse will be requesting property taxes in the amount of $651,715.03; the SDA school district will be requesting property taxes in the amount of $9,228,597; and the Palmyra school district will be requesting property taxes in the amount of $8,137,733 at the meeting. There will be no other items on the agenda other than discussion of each political subdivision’s intent to increase its property tax request by a percentage greater than the “allowable growth percentage” as defined in Nebraska state statute 77-1633.

Senior Center Menu

Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging has released the senior lunch menu. The menu for the next week is as follows: Friday, Sept. 23: Cook’s choice. Monday, Sept. 26: Turkey salad cold plate with fresh tomato wedges, pasta salad, green pea salad, peaches, crackers.

Rain fails to dampen Otoe BBQ activities

Despite some much-needed rain, the Otoe BBQ mostly went on as planned Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. The day started with a breakfast and Fun Run. Winners of the 5K/1mile Fun Run were 5k 1st place Izabel Stubbendick, 5k 2nd place Vivian Aden, 1 mile 1st place Jazz Hanes and 1 mile 2nd place Kathy Knake. The Blue Rock Shoot organized by Mike Koch had 15 shooters. After pivoting to “rain or shine”, the Otoe Auto Show organized by Braden Glinsmann, boasted 18 entries, including one tractor.
