Faculty and staff at Peru State College provide personalized support to new students through the College’s Peru Academic Liaison (PAL) program. The program recently concluded its fourth cycle with a celebration luncheon for new students and their PALs.

A cold frame or hotbed is an easy and inexpensive structure to create. It functions as a small greenhouse, enabling gardeners to extend their growing season in both spring and fall. It can be used to harden off seedlings in spring or grow late season crops of cold tolerant plants like greens. Location The ideal location for your structure is a southern or southeastern exposure with a slight slope to insure good drainage and maximum sun exposure. A sheltered spot with a fence, building, hedge or stack of hay bales to the north will provide protection against winter winds. Just make sure the windbreak protection doesn’t shade the cold frame. Sinking the base into the ground provides additional protection, using the earth for insulation.

Syracuse FFA hosted a meeting Monday, Oct. 18, to gauge the interest in starting an FFA booster group. About 12 local individuals, some former FFA members, attended the meeting, and heard about the benefits of an organized FFA booster group.

Otoe County’s Premier Gardener has been busy since the Otoe County Fair. Duane Hansen, who received the Premier Gardener award for the most entries at the 2022 Otoe County Fair, talked about growing pumpkins and his Guinness World Record journey down the Missouri River in a pumpkin boat in August.
