Vehicle maintenance is often viewed through the lens of keeping cars safe and running smoothly. That impression is accurate, but in addition to potentially saving lives, vehicle maintenance can save drivers money. The summer of 2022 was marked by rapid inflation that affected prices of just about everything, including fuel, which rose to such heights that many drivers sought any way to save money at the pump. Vehicle maintenance is one simple way to reduce fuel costs, sometimes by a significant margin. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that fixing a faulty oxygen sensor could improve gas mileage by as much as 40 percent. Smaller measures also can save drivers money at the pump, as the U.S. DOE estimates that keeping tires properly inflated can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 3 percent while using the motor oil recommended in a vehicle owner’s manual can improve gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent.

How will crop residue removal impact crop yields?

This fall driving across Nebraska I have seen thousands of bales of crop residue, primarily corn stalks baled up. While this is not unusual, the drought across Nebraska definitely had an impact on corn stalks being harvested as a forage for beef cattle. Pasture and rangeland grazing losses were significant across most of the state and hay production was reduced under dryland conditions. While grazing crop fields is ideal, it may not be practical for everyone and some farmers without livestock are looking for another source of income by baling up crop residue bales.

I fully understand why there are and can be accidents by Casey’s on Highway 2. It’s not all about the sun in your eyes. I was in the East bound outside lane approaching the intersection – and no I was not going to turn south at the intersection – when a vehicle at the intersection pulled out in front of me, yes, going SLOW. Yes, I honked! Why would anyone pull out in front of me when there was plenty of space to SAFELY pull out behind me? Stop and think, I am driving 60- 70mph, maneuvering isn’t a split second event. If there was someone closer behind me, one of us would have been in a bad situation. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me. Our VOLUNTEER Fire and Rescue Depts. don’t need to be cleaning up that mess. Safety first. Please pay attention and WAIT your turn! Thank you.

However, these rules will not help find the most common type of skin cancer called a basal cell carcinoma.
