The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board of Directors met on Thursday, March 9, 2023 in Tecumseh. The application by Rob Pfleger of Nebraska City to fill the subdistrict 4 vacancy was approved by the board.
The N.V. Helping Hands 4-H Club met on March 5, 2023 at 2 p.m. in the basement of Grace Lutheran Church in Cook. Secretary Andrew Lovelace read the minutes from the last meeting. Timothy Lovelace demonstrated how to clean crappie for pan-frying and trout for smoking. As a part of the 150 challenge, club members signed over 150 “kindness cards” to deliver to local rehab facilities. Club members discussed the “150 service project” for next month and decided to collect non-perishable food items. The next meeting of the N.V. Helping Hands 4-H Club will be held on April 15, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. at Iron Horse Lake.

Harry Leon Chaffin, 81, of Palmyra passed away March 11, 2023. Born December 7, 1941, in Alva, OK to Ernest and Anna (Bergner) Chaffin. Harry attended grade school in Dacoma, OK and graduated high school at Hulbert, OK.

OCSO to participate in drug-impaired driving enforcement campaign The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the drug-impaired driving enforcement awareness campaign, which runs from April 19 to 23. During this time, extra deputies will be utilized to perform high-visibility patrols and saturation patrols, with emphasis on driving under the influence laws.
With the election of officers, the Syracuse FFA Booster Club has officially gotten its start. A goal of the Syracuse High School Chapter, a meeting on March 1, 2023, also identified goals and next steps for the group.
Syracuse senior Kaleb Swanson signed a letter of intent to play football for Doane College in Crete, Nebraska receiving athletic and academic scholarships. A senior, Swanson was a four-year letter winner for the Rockets playing on both sides of the ball and contributing to a 5-4 winning season.
