In honor of National TRIO Day, SAIL (Students Active in Leadership) focused on a project for the homeless

National TRIO Day is celebrated during the last week of February. A tradition of student members of TRIO programs is giving back to their communities through acts of service. SAIL addressed urgent needs of the Open Door Mission like collecting toilet paper for their homeless which houses 917 safe shelter beds. SAIL members set a goal of collecting 155 (the age of Peru State College) rolls of toilet paper to deliver to the Omaha shelter. Peru State Bobcats rallied for the cause and ended up collecting 302 rolls. Peru’s Student Success Services (SSS) supports eligible students in completing their college degree.

American Legion marks 104th birthday

The Syracuse American Legion Auxiliary Post 100 hosted a breakfast on March 15, celebrating the 104th birthday of the American Legion. At the Syracuse Library from 9-11 a.m., doughnuts and coffee were served to about 30 people. Veterans from all Posts in Otoe County, that is Nebraska City, Palmyra, Syracuse and Talmage, were invited. Under the leadership of Syracuse Elementary School music teacher, Ashley Mayer, 60 kindergarteners saluted the flag, sang happy birthday to veterans and sang other songs.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 27 to 31

The National Weather Service office in Omaha has announced that southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa will observe Severe Weather Awareness Week beginning Monday, March 27. Monday’s NWS messaging will focus on severe thunderstorms, while Tuesday’s messaging will be concerned with weather warnings.

Syracuse Rescue Squad reviews service calls for 2022

Syracuse Rescue Squad statistics for 2022 were shared at the last Syracuse City Council meeting March 8. Syracuse Rescue Chief Tim Wilson provided the year in review. The squad had 361 calls for which 232 were 911 calls, four were intercepts, 78 were transfers, one was a mutual aid and 46 calls were requesting standby. Total calls were up from 357 the year before and up 32 calls from 2012. A majority of calls occurred between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. followed by the 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. timeframe. Runs by day are fairly equal across the week with the most number of calls occurring on Sundays and Wednesdays (57) followed by Mondays (56) and Fridays (52). Patient age with the highest number of calls was the 70-79 age group followed by 80-89 age group. The highest number of youth calls occurred in the 10-19 age group.

Game and Parks Commissioners approve waterfowl recommendations

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved changes to 2023-2024 waterfowl hunting seasons in Commission Orders at its March 14 meeting in Kearney. For the 2023-2024 seasons, the Zone 3 and Zone 4 duck seasons will open a week later than last year with Youth Hunt dates the weekend prior.
