Rockets shoot sixth at Wildwood GC

On a sunny, but very breezy day, the Syracuse boys’ golf team played at the par 72 Wildwood Golf Course in the thirteen-team Nebraska City Invitational on Thursday, April 13, and placed sixth. Senior Robert Shanks shot an 87 for a three-way tie for 15th. After a scorecard playoff, Shanks placed 16th. Shanks scored 48 on the front nine and an impressive 39 on the back nine.

Scout Silver Award Project aims to combat cancer

Syracuse Girl Scout Troop 20756 shared their Silver Award project with the Syracuse City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting on April 12. The three seventh graders Olivia Foley, Ashley Habel and Natalee Wemhoff, explained as part of their Girl Scout Silver Award they are proposing to put a sunscreen dispenser at the Syracuse Aqua Center.

4-H volunteers receive state-level awards

Twenty-two adult volunteers, one 4-H member, and a family of volunteers are being recognized with 2023 Nebraska 4-H Volunteer Awards. The Vrbka, Ott and King Families from Polk County is receiving the Multi-Generation Family of Volunteers Award.

Syracuse City Council proclaims Week of the Young Child

Resolution 23-12 was approved authorizing Mayor Deb Dettmer to sign a proclamation declaring the week of April 8-14, as the Week of the Young Child at the April 12 Syracuse City Council meeting. The week is cause to celebrate quality early childhood care and education for all Nebraska families.

Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging has released the senior lunch menu. The menu for the next week is as follows: Friday, April 21: Kielbasa with peppers and potatoes, carrots, bread, cookie.

Nebraska FCCLA recognizes state leaders and award winners

The Nebraska Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) met for their annual State Leadership Conference April 2-4 in the Lincoln Haymarket area. Nearly 1,100 students and advisers from 90 Nebraska schools attended the conference to grow their leadership skills, celebrate their accomplishments from the past year, and prepare for their future careers.

A recent survey of hiring managers and human resource professionals across companies of various sizes and in an assortment of industries conducted on behalf of CareerBuilder found that certain mistakes were deal breakers for a large percentage of individuals tasked with helping to find new hires. Seventy-seven percent of hiring managers indicated typos or bad grammar on a résumé were enough to disqualify a candidate from consideration. An unprofessional email address (35 percent) and a résumé with long paragraphs of text (25 percent) are some additional mistakes that hiring managers consider deal breakers. This information can prove useful for job seekers, who should know that 39 percent of hiring managers indicated they spend less than a minute looking at a résumé. That brief chance to make an impression should not be undermined by preventable blunders like typos and poor grammar.
