FFA hosts year-end banquet

Syracuse FFA held their year-end banquet on Monday, April 17. The program included recognizing students receiving awards at district and state competitions as well as awarding FFA Degrees, installing 2023-2024 officers and a “Retirement of Jackets” ceremony.

Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging has released the senior lunch menu. The menu for the next week is as follows: Friday, April 28: Cook’s Choice. Monday, May 1: BBQ pulled chicken on bun, baked beans, broccoli with cheese sauce, fruit.

Elaine Louise Zahn, age 92, died April 11, 2023, at Linden View in Syracuse, Nebraska. She was born January 15, 1931, at Genoa, Nebraska to Louis & Myrtle (Welin) Bokelman.

Robert “Georgia” Bridges, 87, of Syracuse, NE passed away Thursday, March 30th, 2023. Bob was born in rural Pulaski County, Georgia in 1935. While stationed at the Lincoln Air Force base he met and married Kathy (Podlesak) Bridges. Bob and Kathy had five children and resided in Lincoln. He is survived by his children James, Anne and Mary, as well as eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his dear friend and longtime companion, Waneta Bales. Rockets track hosts, excels at Scott Nisely Invite

The Syracuse Track teams competed in their own Scott Nisely Memorial Invitational on Thursday, April 13. What was a warm, sunny day, also had wind gusts up to 30 mph that hindered athletes on the backstretch. Freshman Ashlynn Vestal won the 300m hurdles in a time of 47.43 seconds as the only Rocket to win an event. The boys were runner- up to a strong Norris team and the girls place third behind Norris and Beatrice. Next up for the teams are the Falls City Sacred Heart Invite on Tuesday, April 18, which takes place at the Syracuse track, and the Louisville Invite on Thursday, April 20.

Back Home in Nebraska

Last week, I had the opportunity to travel home to Nebraska and visit with many of you in the state. It’s always a delight to be back home interacting with fellow Nebraskans, and I’m thankful I was able to participate in some great events.

Knake presents Eagle Scout project at City Council

Kaden Knake, a Boy Scout in Syracuse Troop 337, presented to the Syracuse City Council at its regular meeting on April 12. Kaden’s community service project for his Eagle Award is building permanent concrete flagpole holders at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse and his request for $150 in Keno Funds was approved by the council.

Rockets shoot sixth at Wildwood GC

On a sunny, but very breezy day, the Syracuse boys’ golf team played at the par 72 Wildwood Golf Course in the thirteen-team Nebraska City Invitational on Thursday, April 13, and placed sixth. Senior Robert Shanks shot an 87 for a three-way tie for 15th. After a scorecard playoff, Shanks placed 16th. Shanks scored 48 on the front nine and an impressive 39 on the back nine.
