Our nation’s government was founded on a system of checks and balances. We have three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. After escaping from a tyrannical monarchy, our founders were concerned that one branch might become more powerful than the others, focused on accomplishing its own goals rather than those of the American people.

Rocket track competes at Sacred Heart meet

The Syracuse track teams competed in the Falls City Sacred Heart Track Meet on Tuesday, April 18, in Syracuse. With another varsity meet scheduled later in the week, only a portion of their athletes competed. But, their meet at Louisville on Thursday was postponed to Monday, May 1, due to weather. The track teams travel to Arlington on Saturday, April 29, for the Nebraska Capitol Conference Meet. Aside from the game, news of the day included naming the Husker’s locker room in honor of former head coach Frank Solich and unveiling a new design for the Huskers main mascot, Herbie Husker.

Lourdes Central Catholic announces state science fair winners

Lourdes Central Catholic had five seventh-grade students receive recognition for their efforts in the 2023 Nebraska Junior Academy State (NJAS) Science Fair, which took place April 20 at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Honorees are as follows: Amelia Moody: Top 10 placement in the NJAS Science Fair; $100 prize for outstanding research.

Husker students, faculty earn Eric Sevareid Awards

Thirty-eight students and a faculty member in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications earned 2023 Eric Sevareid Awards for their exceptional work in broadcast journalism. The awards ceremony took place earlier this month in Minneapolis.
