The Case for Iodized Salt

Imagine how just over one hundred years ago, nearly one-third of people in the upper Great Lakes and upper Midwest regions walked around with a goiter on their neck. A goiter is a lump on the throat, which could be as big as an orange, a grapefruit, or larger. Actually an enlargement of the thyroid gland, a goiter can come from an overactive thyroid gland, an under-active thyroid gland, or an autoimmune condition, but in the United States before the 1920s, the reason was almost always deficiency of iodine.

Bobcat basketball featured at NC Rotary Club

Peru State Men’s Basketball Coach Roman Gentry provided the program for the Nebraska City Rotary Club luncheon at Valentino’s restaurant on South 11th Street on Wednesday, April 26. Coach Gentry took the reins of the Peru State men’s team for the 2022-23 season and the squad posted a fantastic season in tying for the third most wins in program history, 25, and qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament.

Rocket golf plays Plattsmouth, Woodland Hills

The Syracuse boys’ golf team started last week with a home, 9-hole dual against Plattsmouth on Tuesday, April 25. With many of the usual varsity starters not competing, many reserves stepped in. Freshman Brennan Schroeder placed third with a 49. Jack Kreifels and Mason Jording both shot 54 to tie for third. Rounding out the varsity squad were Ryan Damme with a 58 and Jace Stinson with a 61. The varsity team lost 201-215.

Constitutional Carry is just the start

This week, I signed LB77 Constitutional Carry into Nebraska law. This bill fulfills the promise I made to voters to uphold our Second Amendment rights and the ability of all law-abiding Nebraskans to defend themselves.

Two Palmyra students receive state Seal of Biliteracy

The Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska International Language Association have awarded 101 Seals of Biliteracy to 98 Nebraska students this semester. Two Palmyra High School students— Andrew Moyer and Oscar Thomas—received Seals of Biliteracy in Spanish this spring.
