High school students enjoyed a day of art at the NCC Art Show and Activity on April 13. The students went to Logan View High School to set up the artwork, participate in a drawing activity about portraiture taught by Mark Gilbert, and look at the art from other schools in the conference.
The Otoe County Roads Department hosted a tire recycling drive on April 22 and 23. Ryan Neemann with the Roads Department said that the department receives a state grant to do the tire recycling event from every two to three years.
In any discussion of ‘bulb’ plants, the most important distinction to make is between hardy and tender bulbs. Hardy bulbs, including tulip, daffodil, crocus, ect., are planted in the fall and can be overwintered in the ground. Tender bulbs, like gladiola, dahlia and canna, are planted in the spring and must be dug up each fall; they are not cold tolerant enough to survive in the ground during winter.
Gary W. Morrison, 78 of Syracuse passed away on April 18, 2022, at the Syracuse Hospital. He was born on March 10, 1944, in Salina, KS to Wayne & Ethel (McDiffit). Gary joined the Navy 1962 and worked with the Navy Seals during Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1966.
Harold H. McWilliams, 98, of Redding, CA, formerly of Syracuse, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021. He was born on April 3, 1923, to Charles & Leona (Weber) McWilliams in Unadilla. Harold graduated from Syracuse High School and later went to the School of Aeronautics after his military service. Harold served in the 451stbombing group in the 15th Air Force during WWII.
Frankie Hendricks will graduate from Colorado State University on Friday, May 13, 2022, with a bachelor of arts degree in political science. Earlier that day, Hendricks will receive her commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and will be stationed at Aviano NATO Air Force Base, Italy, as an aircraft maintenance officer.

The Rockets boys’ golf team scored a 388 for a sixth place finish out of seven teams in the Lincoln Lutheran Invite at Crooked Creek Golf Course east of Lincoln on Thursday, April 21. Leading the way was Logan Zoller with a score of 91 and an 18th place finish.
The Nebraska Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) met for their annual State Leadership Conference April 3-5 in the Lincoln Haymarket area. More than 1,000 students and advisers from 89 Nebraska schools attended the conference to grow their leadership skills, celebrate their accomplishments from the past year, and prepare for their future careers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of serving Nebraska’s Third Congressional District is the opportunities I get to engage with young people interested in government service. This spring, I’ve welcomed students from Bayard, Oakland-Craig, Boone Central, Summerland, and Doniphan-Trumbull schools, as well as Peru State College, to our nation’s capital. Fielding students’ questions is always a pleasure, and I deeply appreciate their thoughtful feedback and ideas about the issues we are working on in the U.S. House of Representatives.
