National History Day held its 42nd annual state contest on Saturday, April 9. Two hundred and fortynine students from across Nebraska representing 37 schools presented research projects on topics related to this year’s theme, “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, and Consequences.” The event was held at Nebraska Wesleyan after two years of being virtual due to COVID-19.
The Friend of the Farm award is presented annually at Arbor Day Farm’s Arbor Day cocktail reception. This year’s recipient is Bob Brandt of Unadilla.
The Massie-Richards American Legion Auxiliary Unit #100 met at Post Home on May 3, 2022. The colors were advanced and the meeting was opened with a prayer. The Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble were recited and one stanza of the Star Spangled Banner was sung.

The Rocket track teams traveled to Yutan on Tuesday, May 3, for the Nebraska Capitol Conference meet. Senior Kennedy Stanley continues to break records in the pole vault. This time clearing 10’6. Senior Lily Vollertsen broke the record in the shot put with a toss of 43’. The girls’ team finished as runner-up with 108 points to the champion Arlington with 124 points. The boy’s’ team took fourth place and was highlighted by a firstplace finish in the discus by senior Jace Voorhees, 142’.

Syracuse native Katy Zahn Biehl ran in the Boston Marathon on April 18, 2022. Finishing the race in 3:54, Biehl said she was right in the middle of the pack of over 30,000 male and female runners.
The 107th Legislature, Second Session adjourned for the year on April 20th. Last column, I discussed a few legislative wins in a record year for Southeast Nebraska. This week’s column will highlight some of the tax relief legislative wins.
