Restoring a culture of life

In the 49 years since the Roe v. Wade decision, the pro-life movement has displayed remarkable commitment and resolve. Decades of steady, grassroots efforts by pro-life advocates are yielding not just state-level legislation which recognizes the humanity of unborn children but a growing culture of life which seeks to compassionately connect with expectant mothers who lack support.

Prairie Doc ® Perspectives

I don’t know how you feel, but in my opinion, parenting is hard! Someone must have forgotten to hand me the instruction manual when my children came home. I have yet to meet a parent who wouldn’t appreciate one.

Nebraska backs the blue 100 percent

The Good Life we all enjoy is made possible by the courageous men and women in blue. After traveling the state for the past 7 ½ years as governor, I know Nebraskans appreciate all that law enforcement does to keep them safe. While other states cut funding for the police, Nebraska is boosting our support for our law enforcement.

Rocket girls’ track continues tradition, wins districts

As the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca girls’ track team has learned over the years, tradition doesn’t graduate. With state championship teams in 2018 and 2019, this year’s team continues to make its mark. After a contested B-1 district championship on Tuesday, May 10th at Platteview High School head coach Rick Nordhues comments, “It was so much fun watching these kids step up and compete! We were nervous about some injuries keeping us from winning the district title but the girls really came together. It is a testament to the kids. We were without 2 probable placings in the 300 hurdles and our 4 x 800 relay and the girls still made it happen! I am so proud of them!”

The lovely Lady Bess

Isn’t it strange? We move through life and suddenly “discover” anew what our ancestors knew for years - probably thinking they had “discovered” them. What is it I am rambling about? Well – it started like Well – it started like this – about a million or so years ago .

Did you know?

A comprehensive review of research published between 1990 and 2020 studying the link between physical activity and mental health outcomes determined that nearly 90 percent of all peer-reviewed, published research reported a positive, statistically significant relationship between exercise/physical activity and mental health. Conducted by the John W. Brick Mental Health Foundation, the review found that 1,029 of the 1,158 experimental studies examined reported significant positive relationships between physical activity and mental health outcomes. General physical activity, a broad descriptor referring to the amount of daily or weekly physical activity people engage in irrespective of type, had the greatest number of positive studies of any type of physical activity, followed by cardiovascular and aerobic activity and yoga. Authors of the review concluded that their findings illustrate that exercise and movement can now be considered mainstream elements of mental health care.

Grit and determination. Readiness to help at a moment’s notice. Willingness to work long and hard. Steadfastness in the face of difficulty. These are the qualities that define us as Nebraskans. And we saw them on full display last month as our state battled the worst fires in a decade.
