Two hundred thirty-nine FFA members from twelve high schools gathered in Pawnee County on Wednesday, Oct. 6 to compete in the Southeast Area Land Judging Competition. Schools in attendance were Diller-Odell, Palmyra, Tri-County, Meridian, Johnson-Brock, Nebraska City, Fairbury, Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca, Pawnee City, Lewiston, Johnson County Central, and Falls City.
It’s tempting to blame the pandemic for the dizzying rates of mental health concerns among American teens. We are all familiar with the impact Covid is having on our lives, and the disruption it continues to cause in the lives of young people. Kids witnessed vehement disagreements between neighbors, friends, and family over the decisions that had to be made in response to the pandemic, and felt the stress at home as parents faced economic and work changes, all without many of their usual support systems.

Over the past three years, we’ve dealt with shortages of many goods, from lumber to cars to toilet paper. Supply chain shortages have shown that the United States is overreliant on foreign suppliers. Instead of depending on China for medicine, Taiwan for computer chips, or Russia for fertilizer, we need to return the manufacturing of our products to America.

The Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca High School FFA Chapter is looking to start an alumni chapter. They are hosting a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at FirstBank of Nebraska to which all interested parties are invited to attend.
Various organizations urge women to familiarize themselves with their breasts and conduct somewhat routine self-exams so they can uncover any lumps or other issues that may warrant further examination by a physician. Though self-exams can lead to discovery of breast cancer when the disease is most treatable, the World Health Organization notes that as many as 90 percent of breast masses are not cancerous. Non-cancerous abnormalities may be benign masses such as fibroadenoma and cysts or indicative of infection. It's also important that women recognize that breast cancer is not always accompanied by a lump. In fact, the Mayo Clinic reports that many women with breast cancer never experience any signs or symptoms of the disease. In such instances, the disease is discovered during screening tests, which include mammograms.
