Grants available for historic renovation work in rural communities

Applications are being sought for $350,000 in grant funds available for repair and rehabilitation of historic properties in communities of less than 30,000 population. The Rural Nebraska Historic Preservation grant program, being administered by History Nebraska, is intended for properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, properties in a National Registerlisted historic district, or sites determined to be eligible for listing.

Syracuse Junior High Holiday Concert

Syracuse Junior High Students treated friends and family to a night of music and art. Hosted by the Syracuse Music and Art Department, 8th grade students’ art was on display and the junior high band and choir presented holiday music. Twenty-eight artists contributed to the art on display. The evening’s concert started with the singing of the National Anthem by Saphira Halvorsen. The band played ten selections, including Ode to Joy, Angels We Have Heard on High and The First Noel while the choir sang four selections including Like an Eagle and You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch. The Community Sing-a-long with the audience joining in featured Silent Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The junior high band is led by Mr. Dave Purdham and the junior high choir is led by Mrs. Brandy Hall. Mrs. Pam Pfeiffer is the art teacher.

Brandt signs LOI Concordia University

Syracuse High School Senior, Barret Brandt, has accepted an academic and wrestling scholarship from Concordia University in Seward. In the past 12 months, Barret visited a number of colleges deciding on Concordia which he feels will be a good fit for him. Impressed by the campus, staff and wrestling coaches and teammates, Brandt made the decision Dec. 13, 2022.

Elmwood-Murdock rallies, nips Rockets by two

The Rockets hosted Elmwood-Murdock on Thursday in a highly contested game that went down to the wire. The Knights took charge early in the first quarter with an 8-0 lead. The Rockets finally scored at the 3:24 mark as Zoller, Brammier, and Voorhees connected, and the score was 7-11 at the end of the first.

Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over during the holidays and everyday

Traffic fatalities in Nebraska will be at a 15-year high! If traffic fatalities continue at the current rate, we will end the year at the highest number in 15 years. Law enforcement across Nebraska is partnering with the NDOT Highway Safety Office (HSO) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to share the message about the dangers of impaired driving.

Margie Kelly, 91, of Lincoln, passed away in the early hours of Saturday, December 17. Margie was born to Lawrence and Bertha (Armbruster) Long and was raised on a farm north of Falls City.

Connecting Nebraska through 21st century infrastructure

Soon, I will gather with state and local officials to celebrate the opening of the Lincoln South Beltway. This 11-mile, four lane freeway connects U.S. Highway 77 to the Nebraska Highway (N-2). It’s expected to divert over 75% of the truck traffic to the new highspeed facility, saving significant travel time and bringing much needed relief to a congested thoroughfare through the city of Lincoln.
