Irene Elizabeth Wellensiek Maricle
Irene Elizabeth Amanda (Wellensiek) Maricle was born January 7, 1928 in Beatrice, Nebraska to Otto and Charlotte (Pohlman) Wellensiek. She was raised on a farm in rural Otoe County near Syracuse, NE with her parents and two sisters, Anne and Naomi.  She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1945 where she was valedictorian of her class. She attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics Education.  She adored being a part of Love Hall on East Campus where she made lifelong friends who have corresponded for the past 65 years through letters.
During her sophomore year of college, she met and fell in love with Gordon Neal Maricle. On July 27, 1949, Gordon and Irene were united in marriage at Osage Church near Cook, NE. It was a beautiful ceremony where Irene wore the dress she designed and sewed. They lived in Lincoln while Irene completed her last year of college and Gordon took post-graduate classes. The following summer they moved to Beatrice where Gordon was the Assistant County Agent for Gage County. In September of 1950, they moved to the Maricle homestead near Albion to farm with Gordon’s dad.
They soon started a family, which consisted of three daughters and two sons.  Irene was a very loving homemaker and poured herself into her family. Family was always Irene’s top priority. Family vacations were always special adventures and she thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings. In July, 1999, Gordon and Irene celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
She was very involved in church activities at the United Methodist Church including: teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, serving as president of Women Society of Christian Service (WSCS) and later United Methodist Women (UMW), serving on Administrative Board and Council of Ministries, and making sure the family never missed Sunday morning worship.  Irene also enjoyed being active in other organizations such as Parent Music Association (PMA), ONC (Our Neighborhood Club), Extension Club, and Couples Pitch Club.  Later in life, she explored new opportunities by attending Elderhostels, joining the water aerobics class, and being active in book club and art club even having a painting selected for the state art show.
She is survived by daughter Sue (Jim) Hamilton of Omaha, son Keith (Mary Ann) Maricle of rural Albion, daughter Nancy (Alan) Thorson of  Omaha, son Howard (Cindy) Maricle of Erie, CO and Alice (Don) Johnson of Ft. Calhoun, NE; two sisters, Anne Johnson of Lincoln, NE, and Naomi Faust of Nashville, TN, one brother-in-law, R. Scott (Lynn) Maricle of Hanover, IN; fifteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gordon, and one grandson, Craig Hamilton.
