Fifty youth golfers ranging in age from 7-13 years old attended the Junior Golf Camp at the Syracuse Country Club July 7-11, 2025.
Volunteer organizer Nicky Lutjemeyer said it is her favorite week of the year. Lutjemeyer explained golf is a sport that youth can carry with them into their teen years, through adulthood and eventually retirement.
Campers learned about golf, basics like putting, chipping, how to hold and use clubs, how to approach a ball, etiquette and course manners. They learned what it means to be part of a team. Lutjemeyer said it is also important for the participants to have fun.
The campers came willing to learn and improve and through the week, Lutjemeyer could see progress. The camp was attended by about the same number of boys as girls with some having attended the camp for multiple years in a row.
Throughout the week a number of individuals volunteered that included Wyatt Higgins, Braxton Kelch, Judy Neemann, Brennan Schroeder, Rorie Seelhoff, Will Simon, Cade Stephenson, Nate Wemhoff, and Don Wenzel.
Lutjemeyer has been playing golf for 32 years and spent the last five volunteering for the Junior Golf Camp. She said it is rewarding when parents and kids want to come back and also when youth are playing golf outside of camp.
