Max Hughes Memorial Tournament set Jan. 18

The Max Hughes Memorial Tournament is set for Saturday, Jan. 18, at Syracuse Middle School.

There will be four-man round robin matches in Pre-K and K division as well as first and second grade division. There will be eight-man brackets for the third and fourth, fifth and sixth and seventh and eighth grade divisions.

Action begins with Pre-K and K division at 9 a.m. with first and second grade at 11 a.m. and third and fourth grade at 1 p.m. Division action for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth will be 3 p.m. Matches may start earlier than the listed times if possible.

A unique feature of the Max Hughes Memorial Tournament is the drawing for one free pair of Nike sneakers, per age group. These shoes are donated each year by the Hughes family. Max was a shoe collector through and through and this is done to honor Max’s legacy.

A portion of the proceeds of this tournament are set aside to go towards individual scholarships each year which are given through the Max Hughes Memorial Scholarship and the Syracuse Mat Club Scholarship.

The Max Hughes Memorial scholarship is awarded to several athletes each year that wish to go to college and continue wrestling.

Recipients are chosen by Max’s family. The family does several other fundraisers throughout the year to give out as many scholarships as possible and more SHOES.

The Syracuse Mat Club Scholarship is awarded to a senior wrestler or manager that has committed their four years to the wrestling program and have a 3.0 or greater GPA.

Funds from this tournament are also donated to help support the Syracuse High School wrestling program with equipment and national opportunities for youth as they arise.

The tournament is also known for great concessions. Concessions are run by a few groups of sororities and proceeds also go back into the community as college scholarships.

All are welcome to attend the Max Hughes Memorial Tournament! All-day admission is $5/person at the door.
