The new Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca Middle School was open for tours Aug. 27 to those interested in how the new facilities worked and looked.  Brad Buller, superintendent for SDA Schools, was helping give the tours.
Buller said that the new cafeteria at the school required very little lighting due to the windows that make up the wall on one side of the cafeteria. “This is probably my favorite room,” said Buller about the cafeteria. He also explained that the new facilities were made to be more energy efficient with lights that turn off after 30 minutes of inactivity.
The new middle school includes a new vocal music room, band room, library, two computer labs and two science labs. There are also more than 15 new classrooms and a gym for varsity athletics. Buller said that the new gym holds roughly 1,200 people in the bleachers.
Jerry Werner, a member of the SDA school board, said that he has been in on the plans for the new middle school since the beginning. “Everything has come together and has really made a fantastic facility,” he said. “It’s something the community is going to be very proud of.”
