S-D-A Rocket golfers Steph Rodgers and Jessa Swanson scored first and third place medals during action on the home course Thursday.
Rodgers hit for scores of 45 and 42 for an 87 that won the tourney by 10 shots.
Swanson took third place with scores of 49 and 50 for a 99 that was just two strokes behind the pace of second place golfer Cody Vrtiska of Humboldt-TRS.
Despite the tourney winning score that Rodgers shot on Thursday, Rocket Coach Bill Schulte said she was not totally pleased with the first effort of the season.
"She didn't shoot like she is capable of shooting, obviously," Schulte said.
Course conditions could have played a factor in Rodgers’ score. A fungus problem at the course has left the fairways bare in places.
Golfers played the ball up, but conditions were not ideal.
Schulte said the fungus issue is one facing many golf courses this year, and the Rocket coach noted that his top shooter didn't mention the course conditions at all as a possible reason for her higher number.
"Steph doesn't make an excuse," Schulte said. "She just said 'I didn't play very well.'"
Schulte said the round was simply a small blip on the radar of a season that's just getting started. Neither golfer nor coach were worried Thursday night.
"She will get it to where she needs to get it," Schulte said of Rodgers' game.
As for Swanson, the first out was a solid effort, and proof that this season could hold a lot of promise. Schulte noted that the field of golfers from Thursday had quite a few names that the Rockets will see at districts.
By scoring a solid third place, Schulte said Swanson showed that she will be able to make some noise in other tourneys this year.
"I was proud of her for doing that," Schulte said of Swanson's Thursday round.
Looking at team results, Tri County scored a 453 and nailed down the top spot. Lincoln Lutheran was second at 462.
With just two golfers, the Rockets did not record a team score.
