The 2010 Special Olympics Torch Run came through Nebraska City and Syracuse on July 16 on the way to Lincoln’s Bob Devaney Center for the lighting ceremony of the National Special Olympics on July 18.

According to the Special Olympics Torch Run Team Profile, “The Olympic flame symbolizes the light of spirit, knowledge and life. With identical power and majesty, the Special Olympics Flame of Hope, in the entrusted care of the law enforcement community, symbolizes the courage and celebration of diversity that the Special Olympics movement represents.”

The torch was lit in Ames, Iowa, the site of the 2006 National Special Olympics Games, and has been traveling through numerous Nebraska communities since July 11.

Many people gathered to celebrate the Otoe County Special Olympics Team and to show their support for the Special Olympics. Representatives of the athletes and the law enforcement officers escorting them exchanged gifts with city officials during ceremonies held at the athlete’s finish point in each city.
