Thursday, Jan. 21, the Syracuse-Dunbar-Avoca Board of Education voted 5-1 to transfer children from the Unadilla attendance center to Syracuse.
The action followed slightly more than 10 minutes of discussion. Gary Kuenning made the motion. Greg Mueller seconded. Tyler Crownover voted against the motion. The approved motion contained no provision regarding closing the building.
The board then voted 2-4 against moving pre-kindergarten from Syracuse to Unadilla, which followed discussion of about 15 minutes. Crownover and Dean Neels cast the only favorable votes. Neels made the motion. Crownover seconded it. Pre-kindergarten has been at Syracuse the past three years.
About a dozen patrons attended the meeting. No one spoke.
In the discussion before the first vote, Crownover said that a town suffers when its school is closed, which has happened in several area communities, he said. Crownover said that even if there were no students at the school, the building needed to be maintained. He suggested making the Unadilla building the district’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten building. If the building was closed, control of the building should be relinquished, Crownover said.
Andy Burr, board president, said that, regardless of how the board voted, he would like school officials to retain ownership of the building.
Kuenning said that he made his motion because, in the current economic times, it was prudent for the board to be as efficient as possible. The motion left the option to move students back to the Unadilla building when school officials thought it was appropriate, he said.
In discussion before the second motion, Neels said that the Unadilla building was the best building in the district for preschool and that it should be utilized that way.
When the new middle school opens, fourth and fifth graders will move from the Syracuse elementary building. Sixth graders will move from Unadilla. Seventh and eighth graders will move out of the senior high school.
