Landis A. Rulla, Sr., 96, Adams, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Gold Crest Retirement Center, Adams. He was born July 6, 1913, at Sterling, son of J. Gottlieb and Martha Lehrack. He married Lena J. Davis June 2, 1935, at St. John’s American Lutheran Church, Sterling. She died March 15, 2002, at Adams.
Rulla was a farmer and businessman. The Rullas had general stores in Burr, Douglas and Dawson. In 1946, they moved to a farm south of Douglas and farmed for many years. The Rullas also lived at Sterling while Lena Rulla taught school. Landis Rulla was active in community activities. He was an active Mason and Eastern Star member. He belonged to the Lincoln Scottish Rite and Sesostris Shrine. He drove his red Mustang. Traveling with the Mustang Unit was a real important part of his life and he loved every minute of it, as well as all of the members. He was a current Jordan Medal Recipient of Union Lodge, Palmyra, a member of the Douglas United Methodist Church and the Capital City Past Matron and Patron meetings.
Surviving are daughters Mary Heusman and husband Bill, Edinburg, Texas, and Eddyville, Neb., and Ruth Neeman and husband Jerry, Syracuse; sons Lanny and wife Kathleen, Sterling, and Charles, Palmyra; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sister Edith Decker, South Haven, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved and a host of good friends.
Besides his wife, he was preceded by his parents, five sisters, grandson Tom Heusman and great-grandson Zachary Heusman.
A memorial service will be later when all family members can be present. An announcement will be in the Syracuse Journal-Democrat.
The service will be at the Douglas United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lyn Seiser will officiate. Interment will be at Rosehill Cemetery south of Douglas.
Memorials are suggested to the Douglas United Methodist Church or the Mustang Unit of the Sesostris Shrine, Lincoln.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
