Frances E. “Speed” Zeiger, 85, of Syracuse, died at the Good Samaritan Center in Syracuse on Aug. 20, 2010. She was born June 29, 1925 in rural Greeley County to Aaron Eldon and Clare Irene (Giles) Cary. She married Clarence “Wayne” Zeiger on March 22, 1947 in Oberlin, Kan.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence “Wayne” Zeiger, of Syracuse; children Ronald Zeiger and wife Janet of Syracuse, Francis “Clif” Zeiger and wife Aileen of Wheaton, Ill., Frederic Zeiger and wife LeeAnn of Wilber and Angela Ripa and husband Dale of Lincoln; grandchildren Rachel, Kenneth, Steven, Matthew, Paul, Lucas, Abraham, JohnMark, Amelia, Benjamin, and Cliff Zeiger and Lauren, Madeline and Anna Ripa; eight great-grandchildren; sisters Eulalia Cunningham of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Meta Mahoney of Cedar Rapids; brother Jerry Cary of Greeley; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by brother Bud Cary, sister Clara Vanderloop and grandchildren Ryan and Anthony Zeiger.
She worked as a teacher, in the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island during World War II, as a postal clerk and a homemaker. She was a 12th generation Mayflower descendent of Richard Warren and member of St. Paulinus Catholic Church and Altar Society. She enjoyed art, working with oil paintings and teaching art classes. She was a member of Church Circle groups, bridge groups and enjoyed traveling.
Visitation is Monday, Aug. 23, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. An Altar Society Rosary is at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Parish Rosary at 7 p.m. at St. Paulinus Catholic Church.
Funeral services are Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Paulinus Catholic Church in Syracuse with Rev. Michael Stec officiating.
Organist is Barb Neels. Vocalist is Roy Eagan. Lector is Donald Sweat. Acolyte is Andy Burr. Congregational singing is planned.
Pallbearers are grandchildren Kenneth, Matthew, Paul, Lucas, JohnMark, and Abraham Zeiger. Honorary pallbearers are grandchildren Rachel, Steven, Amelia, Benjamin, and Cliff Zeiger, Lauren, Madeline and Anna Ripa; as well as Bill and Betty Dressen, Ernie and Kay Staack and Cheryl Beal.
Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse.
Memorials are suggested to St. Paulinus Parish Hall fund.
