Alton “Hantz” Gartner, 84, Unadilla, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his residence. He was born Sept. 22, 1925, near Unadilla, son of Henry and Anna (Hahne) Gartner. He married Averil Clark Aug. 10, 1949, at the Methodist Church at Alvo.
A lifelong Unadilla area resident, Gartner was a farmer, and owned and operated Gartner Trucking, Unadilla, 10 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, served on the District 20 and 25 school boards, served on the board of the Farmers Union Coop, was chairman of Hopewell Cemetery, served many years as a 4-H leader and was 2007 Germanfest king.
Surviving are his wife, Averil, Unadilla; sons, Clark and wife Tess, Tecumseh, and Gerald and wife Lisa, Peachtree City, Ga.; daughters, Diane Genuchi and husband Charles, Palmyra, and Ralene Wesemann and husband David, Lincoln; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene Gruber and husband Ernest, Louisville; sisters-in-law, Viola Gartner, Unadilla, and Mary Gartner, Syracuse; and many other relatives and friends.
Gartner was preceded by his parents; and brothers, Ralph and Randall.
The service was Tuesday, Jan. 12, at the Unadilla United Methodist Church. The Rev. Tony Dawson officiated. Interment was at Hopewell Cemetery southwest of Unadilla.
Pallbearers were: Aaron, Justin and Spencer Gartner; Kyle and Reid Genuchi and Seth Wesemann.
Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters and great-granddaughters.
David Francis was organist. There was special music.
Memorials are suggested to the Hopewell Cemetery Fund.
