Leanna Jean (Tolles) Kattes, Lincoln, formerly of Nebraska City, passed away at The Waterford in College View at the age of 91 years from complications of non-small cell lung cancer and old age.
She was born Nov. 24, 1926, in Hiawatha, Kan., to Romine F. and Clarisa G. (Henry) Tolles.
After leaving school for a period of time, she returned to Reserve (KS) High School where she was a cheerleader, acted in the class play and joined her sister Donna in the class of 1948 to become the first of their family to receive high school diplomas.
Jean met the love of her life, Walter Thomas Kattes, when he and a group of his Missouri Pacific Railroad co-workers came in to her parent’s café where she was waiting tables.
Jean and Tommy, as she called him, married Sept. 18, 1948, in Reserve, Kan.
Following Tommy’s death March 15, 1996, Jean remained in Nebraska City until October 2011 when she moved to Lincoln, for health reasons.
Jean was a ‘Jill of all trades’ and held a wide variety of jobs throughout her life.
Oddly enough her very first and last were the same – popping popcorn – first at the movie theater in Hiawatha in the 1940’s and lastly for a popcorn store in Nebraska City in the 1990’s.
Through the years in between she worked temporary jobs in a laundry, as a waitress, taking in ironing, breaking eggs, as an office clerk writing letters and once the children were in school full-time she was the baker in a bakery, a coat inspector, a pet food quality control inspector and a USDA meat inspector.
Survivors include:  daughters Terri Kattes and Linda Kattes, both of Lincoln; son James Kattes (Stephanie Mazzuca), Milford, Kan.; grandchildren Bobbi (Marion) and Jeff Bivens and Thomas Hughes and fiancée Ashley Watkins, of Nebraska City; Billi Marion, Lincoln; Clarisa (Kattes) and Brandan Crum, Milligan; Michele (Kattes) and James Nesbitt, Geneva; Ethan Kattes (Amy Baugh), Hickman; Cody Groth and Austin Groth, both Hill City, Kan.; great-grandchildren Alysia & Jacob Warren, Trace Schmitz, Macie and Makenna Bivens; Taylor and Austin Schmitz; Riley and Elliott Hughes; Jordyn, Carter and Rainie Nesbitt; and Brooklyn Groth; great-great-grandchildren Emma Leann Jones and Slayder Bauers; step-granddaughter Helena Hartman;  step-great-granddaughter Erin (Bivens) and Don Butler and step-great-great-grandson Noah Juelfs; brother and wife Richard and Virginia Tolles, Hiawatha, Kan.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
